A fragile record of fleeting water on Mars

چکیده
Abstract The light-toned sedimentary layers that outcrop widely throughout Mars’ Southern Highlands have long been an enigma in uncovering the climatic history of Mars. Although these units seem to contain unique records fluctuating surface conditions, role water their formation is debated. A distinctive property many such deposits elevated thermal inertia relative surrounding materials. This temperature-controlling trait often interpreted indicate induration resulting from aqueous processes. However, prevalent erosional landforms suggest host much weaker materials than neighboring units. We address this apparent contradiction by disentangling relationships between inertia, mineralogy, and erosion susceptibility quantifying cohesion layered Arabia Terra region. demonstrate variations dust cover associated with erodibility eolian abrasion can be inconspicuous controls on inertia. ultimately find are not as cohesive would expected a high water-to-rock ratio setting either during or after deposition. If water-rich conditions existed region Noachian, they may only intermittent fleeting.

A ∼3.5 Ga record of water-limited, acidic weathering conditions on Mars
The secondary mineral budget on Earth is dominated by clay minerals, Al-hydroxides, and Fe-oxides, which are formed under the moderate pH, high water-to-rock ratio conditions typical of Earth's near-surface environment. In contrast, geochemical analyses of rocks and soils from landed missions to Mars indicate that secondary mineralogy is dominated by Mg (±Fe, Ca)-sulfates and Feoxides. This dis...
متن کاملLarge wind ripples on Mars: A record of atmospheric evolution.
Wind blowing over sand on Earth produces decimeter-wavelength ripples and hundred-meter- to kilometer-wavelength dunes: bedforms of two distinct size modes. Observations from the Mars Science Laboratory Curiosity rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal that Mars hosts a third stable wind-driven bedform, with meter-scale wavelengths. These bedforms are spatially uniform in size and typi...
متن کاملWater on Mars and Venus
This paper reviews evidence relating to the abundance of water on early Mars and Venus from measurements of the present abundance of hydrogen compounds, deuterium to hydrogen (D/H) ratios and escape fluxes. For Mars, recent measurements of D/H ratios in SNC hydrous minerals provide data on the ratios at earlier times to augment present atmospheric values. Interpretation of these data shows that...
متن کاملA Mechanism for Recent Production of Liquid Water on Mars
Introduction: Though Mars is a cold, dry planet, with respect to the thermal stability of liquid water at low altitudes it is not terribly different from comparably cold places on Earth [1]. In dry air such water would evaporate faster on Mars, at a rate comparable to a 60°C hot spring on Earth, but the heat loss associated with that evaporation would be mitigated by the poor thermal convection...
متن کاملSample Return from “water” Seeps on Mars
Motivation: Some of the most intriguing science discoveries on Mars came from sites that are currently inaccessible for in-situ analysis and sample return. The recent discovery of recurring slope lineae (RSL), such as those observed in Newton crater, are on steep slopes (25° – 40°) that are hundreds of meters down from the crater rim. In-situ analysis and sample capture of out-flow deposits tha...
